Ben Solee - JoyBurst - The Experience Lab
Joy Burst with Ben Sollee — Music for the Soul

Cellist, composer, and storyteller Ben Sollee (and his guest artist, 7-week old baby Azicah) performs his genre-spanning music as inspiration for caregivers and health care heroes. This 15-minute concert — filled with Ben’s soulful sound — provides a musical respite for health care leaders, team members, and providers — or anyone needing a little energy shift.

Ben, a Kentucky native, is known for his performances, storytelling, and non-traditional album presentation. His music has no boundaries and his career has taken him from the stage to film and TV. You may recognize his music from shows like ABC’s Parenthood and HBO’s Weeds. His most recent project, Ruth “the world’s first dance book,” is an ebook filled with embedded dances from famed choreographers Keone and Mari, with original composition done by Ben. Through every project he shows the joy that can arise from passion, collaboration, and an eye for possibilities.

Mind Body Ambassadors - Parkland FL
Finding Experience Experts Everywhere

The Experience Lab  welcomed 10 inspiring Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School students and their teachers to share their wellness wisdom with Experience Lab Partners–and it was extraordinary seeing these young people serve as reverse mentors for health care executives.

In The Experience Lab we believe in the power of an Inside Out approach to culture and Experience transformation–starting first on the inside–focusing on the culture and Experience we create for and with our team members and providers. We also believe in the power of outside in Experience learning–tapping into the wisdom and expertise of exemplars and experts from outside of our organizations and the health care industry as a whole. That’s why our Lab Partners—visionary health care leaders from across the country–are exposed to dozens and dozens of experts and brands as they explore our principles of Experience and create their unique formulas for designing the future.

Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School Mind Body Ambassadors, Parkland Florida
On February 14, 2018 Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School (MSDHS) Experienced one of the most tragic school massacres of our time. Seventeen people were killed. In the aftermath of the tragedy young people and teachers rallied to find their way–and are now leading the way.  Initially, World History Teacher, Diane Wolk Rogers, did not have the tools and resources she needed to cope with the trauma–personally or as a guide for her students. She took it upon herself to become certified in Mind-Body Medicine and bring the calming impact of breathing, mindfulness, and meditation to her colleagues and students.

Today Diane’s extraordinary Mind-Body Ambassadors Club is filled with students who are now certified facilitators powerfully sharing their new skills with others across the school district, the community, and the world.

We recently partnered with students and teachers from MSDHS Mind-Body Ambassadors club to share their wisdom and practice with hundreds of Experience Lab Partners in an immersive Experience Salon. The energy in the room was electric as passionate and poised high school students created a safe and brave space, guiding health care leaders to expand their definition of wellness, practice new tools and techniques, and think bigger about the realm of human Experience design. These students were truly enlightening Experience teachers.

When it comes to designing a more meaningful and memorable Experience for our team members, providers, patients, and guests we find that tapping the wisdom of unlikely experts can be the very best catalyst for transformation. Who are you learning from? Who might be a reverse mentor for your cultural and Experience revolution?

Are you ready to take the leap to distinguish your organization and transform your culture from the Inside Out? Charity on Stage at STIR 2016
A Voice for Transforming the Health Care Experience

Charity Sunshine Tillemann-Dick
1983 – 2019

At The Experience Lab, we are fortunate to convene and partner with some of the most visionary, courageous, and inspiring people who help to imagine a new future for health care. These provocateurs come from inside and outside of the industry–big thinkers, innovators, artists, scientists, and experts of all kinds–sharing their wisdom, passion, and expertise with our collective of health care executives who are boldly leading the industry in making health care better.

Charity Sunshine Tillemann-Dick, acclaimed soprano, author, speaker, and two-time double lung transplant recipient was part of The Experience Lab brain (and heart) trust from inception. She eagerly shared her wisdom, passion, and clarion call for a more human health care Experience with Experience Lab Partners. From the STIR stage at the Guggenheim Museum and the San Francisco War Memorial & Performing Arts Center, and as guest faculty for Inside Out –the National Experience Transformation Collaborative –Charity reminded us time and again that our patients are our greatest teachers.

A uniting force for the industry, Charity had a magnetic ability to bring people together. In her most recent address to our collaborative of visionary health care executives on the theme of LOVING, Charity shared the breadth and depth of her journey and highlighted the struggles we may face as patients and caregivers. She gave voice to the need for love to inform our care and interactions and how the Experience is central to everything that happens.

“Outcomes are important, but in some ways it’s more important for patients to feel heard, seen, and valued. We can’t be everything to every patient. And if we try, we will fail. Yet we can be exactly what a patient needs in the moments we are with them,” said Charity.

On April 23, Charity passed peacefully with her family at her side and sunshine on her face. Her family announced her death on Facebook, writing, “In this moment, the world is dark. But Charity’s rays extend far beyond her tragic finale on this earth stage. Her light continues to illuminate the hearts of thousands and, in that way, Charity is with us always.”

We are better for our time in Charity’s light and will continue to amplify her beautiful voice on our never-ending quest to make the health care Experience the best it can be for everyone.

We invite you to enjoy the magic of Charity Sunshine Tillemann-Dick and the impromptu closing performance she orchestrated at STIR 2016: What do you get when you combine cello, percussion, soulful singer, poet, dancers, and soprano as the improvisational finale at a most remarkable gathering? Radiant Sunshine.
